17 verses for guidance
यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतसः। कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं मित्रद्रोहे च पातकम्॥
Even if these men, their minds overcome by greed, do not see the sin in destroying their own family and the crime in treachery to friends.
अवाच्यवादांश्च बहून्वदिष्यन्ति तवाहिताः। निन्दन्तस्तव सामर्थ्यं ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्॥
Your enemies will speak many unspeakable words, slandering your abilities. What could be more painful than that?
दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगतस्पृहः। वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते॥
One whose mind is not disturbed by sorrow, who does not crave pleasure, and who is free from attachment, fear, and anger - such a sage is called one of steady wisdom.
यः सर्वत्रानभिस्नेहस्तत्तत्प्राप्य शुभाशुभम्। नाभिनन्दति न द्वेष्टि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥
One who is without attachment everywhere, who neither rejoices nor hates on obtaining good or evil, is firmly established in wisdom.
ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंसः सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते। सङ्गात्सञ्जायते कामः कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते॥
When a person dwells on sense objects, attachment develops. From attachment arises desire, and from unfulfilled desire comes anger.
क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोहः सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रमः। स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति॥
From anger arises delusion; from delusion, confusion of memory; from confusion of memory, destruction of intelligence; and from destruction of intelligence, one perishes.
रागद्वेषवियुक्तैस्तु विषयानिन्द्रियैश्चरन्। आत्मवश्यैर्विधेयात्मा प्रसादमधिगच्छति॥
But one who controls the mind and moves among sense objects with senses freed from attachment and aversion attains divine grace and inner peace.
श्रीभगवानुवाच। काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः। महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्॥
The Supreme Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, born of the mode of passion. It is all-devouring and the greatest sin. Know this as the enemy here.
वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः। बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः॥
Free from attachment, fear, and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, many have become purified by the austerity of wisdom and attained My divine nature.
ज्ञेयः स नित्यसन्न्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति। निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते॥
One who neither hates nor desires the fruits of actions is known to be always in renunciation. Such a person, free from dualities, O mighty-armed Arjuna, is easily liberated from bondage.
विद्याविनयसम्पन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि। शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिताः समदर्शिनः॥
The wise see with equal vision a learned and humble Brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and an outcaste.
इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः। निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्माद्ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः॥
Those whose minds are established in evenness have conquered creation here itself. Brahman is flawless and the same; therefore they are established in Brahman.
शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात्। कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः॥
One who is able to withstand here itself, before liberation from the body, the impulse arising from desire and anger — that person is a yogi, that person is happy.
कामक्रोधवियुक्तानां यतीनां यतचेतसाम्। अभितो ब्रह्मनिर्वाणं वर्तते विदितात्मनाम्॥
For those ascetics who are free from desire and anger, whose minds are controlled, and who have realized the Self, liberation in Brahman exists on all sides.
यतेन्द्रियमनोबुद्धिर्मुनिर्मोक्षपरायणः। विगतेच्छाभयक्रोधो यः सदा मुक्त एव सः॥
...with senses, mind, and intellect controlled, the sage intent on liberation, devoid of desire, fear, and anger — such a one is forever free.
बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः। अनात्मनस्तु शत्रुत्वे वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत्॥
For one who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends. But for one who has failed to do so, the mind remains the greatest enemy.
सुहृन्मित्रार्युदासीनमध्यस्थद्वेष्यबन्धुषु। साधुष्वपि च पापेषु समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते॥
One who has equal regard for friends, companions, enemies, neutrals, mediators, the hateful, relatives, saints, and sinners — such a person excels.
