Chapter 5 • Verse 23

शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात्। कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः॥

śhaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṁ prāk śharīra-vimokṣhaṇāt kāma-krodhodbhavaṁ vegaṁ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ

Meaning

One who is able to withstand here itself, before liberation from the body, the impulse arising from desire and anger — that person is a yogi, that person is happy.

Mastery over desire and anger must be achieved while we are still alive in this body. The test of spirituality is now, not after death. One who can resist these powerful impulses is already liberated and truly happy.

Strength Reflection

"I practice mastering my impulses of desire and anger each day, building real freedom."

Devotional Surrender

O Lord, give me strength to overcome the powerful waves of desire and anger.
