Chapter 5 • Verse 22

Meaning

The pleasures that arise from contact with sense objects are sources of suffering only. They have a beginning and an end, O son of Kunti; the wise do not delight in them.

Sense pleasures contain the seeds of suffering because they are temporary. The wise person understands this cycle and does not become dependent on fleeting enjoyments. This is not rejection of pleasure but freedom from attachment to it.

Strength Reflection

"I enjoy life's pleasures without becoming attached to them, knowing they are temporary."

Devotional Surrender

Lord, wean me from dependence on temporary pleasures. Let me find joy in You alone.
