Chapter 2 • Verse 58

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः। इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥

yadā saṁharate chāyaṁ kūrmo 'ṅgānīva sarvaśhaḥ indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣhṭhitā

Meaning

When one withdraws the senses from sense objects like a tortoise withdrawing its limbs, one's wisdom is firmly established.

The tortoise withdraws its limbs when threatened. Similarly, the sage can withdraw attention from the senses at will. This is mastery over the senses, not denial of them.

Strength Reflection

"I develop the ability to withdraw my attention from external distractions at will."

Devotional Surrender

O Lord, grant me the ability to turn my senses inward toward You.
