Chapter 9 • Verse 20

trai-vidyā māṁ soma-pāḥ pūta-pāpā yajñair iṣhṭvā svar-gatiṁ prārthayante te puṇyam āsādya surendra-lokam aśhnanti divyān divi deva-bhogān

Meaning

The knowers of the three Vedas, who drink the soma and are purified of sins, worship Me through sacrifices, praying for passage to heaven. They reach the sacred realm of Indra and enjoy celestial pleasures.

Ritualistic worshippers gain heavenly rewards — but these are temporary. Ritual purity and proper sacrifice earn heavenly pleasures, yet not liberation. This is significant achievement but not the highest. The Gita doesn't dismiss these practices but points beyond them.

Strength Reflection

"I honor traditional practices while aspiring beyond temporary heavenly rewards."

Devotional Surrender

Lord, grant me not just heavenly pleasures but eternal union with You.
