Chapter 6 • Verse 5

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्। आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः॥

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Meaning

One must elevate oneself by one's own mind, not degrade oneself. The mind alone is the friend of the self, and the mind alone is the enemy of the self.

This profound verse places responsibility squarely on us. Your mind can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy — the choice is yours through training and awareness. No one else can do this work for you. Self-compassion and self-discipline must work together: uplift yourself, don't put yourself down.

Strength Reflection

"I take responsibility for my mind, training it to be my friend rather than my enemy."

Devotional Surrender

O Lord, help me transform my mind from an obstacle into an instrument of liberation.
