Chapter 2 • Verse 20

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः। अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे॥

na jāyate mriyate vā kadāchin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śhāśhvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śharīre

Meaning

The soul is never born and never dies; it has never come into being and will never cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.

This is the central teaching about the soul - it was never born and will never die. It exists eternally. The body's death doesn't touch it. With this knowledge, what is there to fear?

Strength Reflection

"I am birthless and deathless. I am the eternal soul witnessing this temporary drama of life."

Devotional Surrender

O Eternal Lord, awaken in me the knowledge of my own eternal, unborn nature.
