Chapter 18 • Verse 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच। काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः। सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस्त्यागं विचक्षणाः॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha kāmyānāṁ karmaṇāṁ nyāsaṁ sannyāsaṁ kavayo viduḥ sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṁ prāhus tyāgaṁ vichakṣhaṇāḥ

Meaning

The Supreme Lord said: The wise understand sannyasa as the abandonment of desire-motivated actions. The discerning speak of tyaga as the relinquishment of the fruits of all actions.

Krishna clarifies: sannyasa means giving up actions done for personal desire. Tyaga means giving up attachment to results of all actions. One abandons selfish actions; the other abandons selfish expectation.

Strength Reflection

"I give up desire-driven actions and attachment to results of all actions."

Devotional Surrender

O Lord, help me understand true renunciation — of selfish actions and their fruits.
