Chapter 18 • Verse 39
यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः। निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम्॥
yad agre chānubandhe cha sukhaṁ mohanam ātmanaḥ nidrālasya-pramādotthaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛitam
Meaning
That happiness which deludes the self both in the beginning and in the end, arising from sleep, laziness, and negligence — that is declared to be tamasic.
Tamasic happiness is deluding from start to finish. It comes from excessive sleep, laziness, and carelessness — numbing but never truly satisfying. This is the happiness of ignorance.
Strength Reflection
"I avoid the false happiness of excessive sleep, laziness, and neglect."
Devotional Surrender
O Lord, wake me from tamasic happiness that deludes and numbs.
