Chapter 17 • Verse 4
यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः। प्रेतान्भूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसा जनाः॥
yajante sāttvikā devān yakṣha-rakṣhānsi rājasāḥ pretān bhūta-gaṇānśh chānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ
Meaning
Sattvic people worship the gods; rajasic ones worship demigods and demons; others, the tamasic, worship ghosts and spirits.
Faith determines what we worship: sattvic people worship divine beings (devatas), rajasic people worship powerful spirits for material gain, tamasic people worship ghosts and dark entities. Our object of worship reveals our nature.
