Chapter 17 • Verse 2
श्रीभगवानुवाच। त्रिविधा भवति श्रद्धा देहिनां सा स्वभावजा। सात्त्विकी राजसी चैव तामसी चेति तां शृणु॥
śhrī bhagavān uvācha tri-vidhā bhavati śhraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā sāttvikī rājasī chaiva tāmasī cheti tāṁ śhṛiṇu
Meaning
The Supreme Lord said: The faith of embodied beings is of three kinds, born of their nature — sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic. Hear about this.
Krishna explains that faith comes in three varieties based on the person's innate nature (svabhava). Sattvic faith is pure, rajasic is passionate, tamasic is dark. Our fundamental disposition colors our faith.
