Chapter 15 • Verse 1

श्रीभगवानुवाच। ऊर्ध्वमूलमधःशाखमश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम्। छन्दांसि यस्य पर्णानि यस्तं वेद स वेदवित्॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śhākham aśhvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam chhandānsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit

Meaning

The Supreme Lord said: They speak of an imperishable Ashvattha tree with roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedas. One who knows this tree knows the Vedas.

The world is compared to an eternal fig tree (Ashvattha) with roots in the Supreme (above) and branches spreading below. The Vedic hymns are its leaves. Understanding this metaphor of creation is knowing the essence of all scriptures.

Strength Reflection

"I see the world as a cosmic tree rooted in the Divine, sustained by sacred knowledge."

Devotional Surrender

O Lord, help me understand this cosmic tree rooted in You.
