Chapter 14 • Verse 9
सत्त्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रजः कर्मणि भारत। ज्ञानमावृत्य तु तमः प्रमादे सञ्जयत्युत॥
sattvaṁ sukhe sañjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata jñānam āvṛitya tu tamaḥ pramāde sañjayaty uta
Meaning
Sattva attaches one to happiness, rajas to action, O Bharata, while tamas, veiling knowledge, attaches to negligence.
Each guna creates its characteristic attachment: sattva to happiness and peace, rajas to activity and achievement, tamas to carelessness and avoidance. Recognizing which guna dominates helps us work toward balance and transcendence.
Strength Reflection
"I observe which guna dominates my current state and work toward transcendence."
Devotional Surrender
O Lord, help me recognize and transcend all three types of attachment.
